Screw Gauge Experiment

Aim:

To measure the diameter of a small sphere using a screw gauge.

Apparatus:

Screw gauge, small sphere, and notebook.

Theory:

A screw gauge is a precision instrument used to measure small lengths.

Formula:

Least Count (L.C.) = Pitch / Number of Divisions on Circular Scale

Procedure:

  1. Determine the least count.
  2. Check for zero error.
  3. Place the sphere and tighten gently.
  4. Note the main and circular scale readings.
  5. Calculate using Total Reading = MSR + (CSR × L.C.)

Diagram:

Result:

The average diameter of the sphere is determined.
