Motion, Rest, and Types of Motion
Write-up:
An object is said to be in motion if it changes its position with time, and in rest if it does not. However, motion and rest are relative terms. A person sitting inside a moving train is at rest with respect to another passenger but in motion with respect to someone standing on the platform.
Types of motion include:
- Rectilinear: straight path (e.g., car on a straight road)
- Curvilinear: curved path (e.g., ball in air)
- Circular: round path (e.g., fan blade)
- Oscillatory: to-and-fro (e.g., swing)
- Random: no fixed path (e.g., flying insect)
- Periodic: repeating at intervals (e.g., pendulum)
- Non-periodic: does not repeat regularly
