Anomalous Expansion of Water
Anomalous Expansion of Water
- 1. Most substances contract on cooling, but water shows an anomaly.
- 2. When water is cooled from 100°C to 4°C, it contracts normally.
- 3. On further cooling from 4°C to 0°C, water expands instead of contracting.
- 4. This unusual behavior is called the Anomalous Expansion of Water.
- 5. At 4°C, water attains its maximum density and minimum volume.
- 6. On freezing, water expands further, hence ice is less dense and floats.
- 7. This property helps aquatic life survive in water bodies during winter.
