Class 5 Maths | Learn to find the typical value of a group

Simple ExplanationStory TimePractice MCQsLife Skills

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of average or mean.
  • Calculate the average of a group of numbers.
  • Use the formula: Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values.
  • Solve everyday problems involving average marks, heights, temperatures and quantities.
  • Understand that average represents a group but does not show every individual value.

2. A Small Story: The Class Fruit Party

One Friday, Ms Tara asked four students how many apples they had brought for the class fruit party. Riya brought 10 apples, Kabir brought 12, Aman brought 8 and Meera brought 10.

“How many apples would each student get if we shared all the apples equally?” asked Ms Tara.

The children added the apples: 10 + 12 + 8 + 10 = 40. There were four students, so they divided 40 by 4.

40 ÷ 4 = 10.

“The average is 10 apples per student!” said Meera. “One number can help us understand the whole group.”

Ms Tara smiled. “Exactly! Average helps us summarise a group of numbers.”

Think about it: Why did the children divide by 4? Because there were four students sharing the total equally.

3. What Is Average?

The average, also called the mean, is a number that represents the typical value of a group of numbers. It can also tell us what each person would receive if a total were shared equally.

Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values

Worked Example

Find the average of 10, 12, 8 and 10.

Step 1: Add the numbers. 10 + 12 + 8 + 10 = 40

Step 2: Count the values. There are 4 numbers.

Step 3: Divide. 40 ÷ 4 = 10

Answer: The average is 10.

4. Average in Everyday Life

  • At school: Finding average test marks.
  • In sports: Finding a player’s average score.
  • At home: Calculating average daily pocket money or spending.
  • Weather: Finding the average temperature over several days.
  • In a shop: Calculating the average number of items sold each day.

5. Quick Maths Challenge

A student reads 4 pages on Monday, 6 pages on Tuesday and 8 pages on Wednesday. How many pages does the student read per day on average?

Total pages = 4 + 6 + 8 = 18 pages.
Number of days = 3.
Average = 18 ÷ 3 = 6 pages per day.

7. Moral Values and Life Skills

Fairness and sharing: Average helps us understand how a total can be shared equally among a group.

Honesty: Include every number and count carefully. Leaving out a value may give the wrong answer.

Teamwork: When people share and work together, everyone can contribute to a common goal.

Wise decisions: An average is useful, but it does not tell the whole story. Look at individual values too before making a decision.

8. Rainbow Challenge: Explain It Yourself

  1. What does average mean?
  2. Find the average of 6, 8, 10 and 12.
  3. A class has 20 students. The total number of books they read in a month is 100. What is the average number of books read per student?
  4. Name two places where averages are used in daily life.
  1. Average is the typical value of a group of numbers; it is also called the mean.
  2. Sum = 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 = 36. Average = 36 ÷ 4 = 9.
  3. Average = 100 ÷ 20 = 5 books per student.
  4. Examples include average test marks, average temperature, average height and average daily sales.

9. Remember This!

Average = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values
Add. Count. Divide. Check your answer!
