How can salt be separated from seawater?
Salt can be obtained from seawater by evaporation. Crystallisation can be used when purer crystals are required.

What is sublimation?
Sublimation is the direct change of a solid into vapour on heating without passing through the liquid state. Camphor and ammonium chloride can sublime.

A separating funnel separates immiscible liquids, such as oil and water, by allowing the denser lower liquid to drain first.
Why is alum added during water purification?
Alum helps very fine suspended particles clump together into heavier particles so that they settle faster during sedimentation.
