Density

Introduction- Which one is more heavy? 1 kg of cotton or 1 kg of iron.

Answer is both equal. Next which is more dense 1kg of cotton or 1 kg of iron? Now answer is Iron. To understand this let's learn a term Density .  Density is the measure of how much matter is in a given amount of space.

Mindmap

Definition - Mass per unit volume.

Formula- Density = Mass÷ Volume

Factors- 1. directly proportional to Mass

2. Inversely proportional to volume

Units- S.I - kg/ m³

C.G.S- g/cm³

1 kg/ m³= 1000 g/ cm³

Regular bodies - mass is found out using balance and volume by using formula

Irregular bodies- mass is found out using balance and volume by water displacement method

Liquid - using density bottle

Remember Fomulas/ relations:

1. D= M÷V

2. M= DxV

3. V= M÷ D

4. 1 g/ cm³= 1000 kg/ m³

5. 1g/ liter= 1 kg/ m³

6. 1 m³= 1000000 cm³

Check you knowledge:

1. Define density

2. Write S.I unit and CGS unit of Density

3.How is S.I and C.G.S unit of Density related ?

4.How will you find out density of a brass, if Irregular piece of brass is provided to you?

5. How will you find out density of a liquid?

6. Which one is more heavier 1 kg sugar or 1 kg cotton ?

7. Which one is more dense 1 kg of iron or 1 kg of Aluminum?

Do numerical;

1.Find density of a substance of mass 200 g occupies volume of 100 cm³.

2. Find volume of a substance of mass 200 g and density 2 g/ cm³.

3. Find mass of a substance of volume 100 cm³ and density 2 g/ cm³.

4.convert 5 g/ cm³ in I) kg/ m³

II) g/ liter

5 convert 500 g/ liter in i) g/ cm³

ii) kg/ m³
