. Chapter - Matter
● Definition- Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space
Mass- • The amount of matter a body contains is called its mass.
Volume -The space occupied by an object is called its volume.
● Three states of matter are
1. Solid,
2. Liquid
3. Gas
● Composed of:- Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. In most substances, atoms do not exist independently. They join up to form molecules which have independent existence.
● Properties .
- solids, have a definite shape, volume and are rigid and incompressible.
- Liquids, have a definite volume but no definite shape are rigid .They flow and are more compressible than solids.
- gases, have no definite volume or definite shape.They are highly compressible and fill up all available space.
● Change of state- Matter changes its state when heated or cooled to the right degree. The process is called interconversion of state because it is reversible.

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1- Matter occupies space.
Take a container having water .Mark the level of water , put one stone in the beaker.awater level increases , showing matter occupies space.
Activity 2- Liquids take shape of the container .
Water is in a bottle then taken in a beaker, then transfered to measuring cylinder .It is observed that Shape of water is same as shape of container
Activity 3:-
1kg of ice at 0⁰C is taken in a beaker with thermometer in it.It is heated to melt the ice.
Observation –
i) Temperature of ice remains 0⁰C on melting.
ii) Heat is needed to change ice at 0⁰C to water at 0⁰C.

● Evaporation is a process of change of state from liquid to gas at any temperature. It is surface phenomenon.
● Cohesive force- Force of attraction between same kind of molecules.
● Adhesive force- Force of attraction between molecules of different kind.
