● Laws of Refraction -
- The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal at the point of incidence, all lie in the same plane.
- The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence 'i' to the sine of the angle of refraction 'r' for the pair of given media is always constant
● Cause- Speed of light is different in different media.
● Optical density - inversely proportional to speed of light. Light has more speed in optically rarer medium. Speed decreases in optimally denser medium
● Cases:
When a ray of light passes from a rarer to denser medium it bends towards the normal
When a ray of light passes from a denser to rarer medium it bends away from the normal
● Atmospheric refraction- Different layer of air having different densities, when light passes through them, bends
● Effects-1. Depth of water appears to be less due to refraction
2. Account in water appears to be raised due to refraction of light.
3. The pencil in water appears to be bent due to refraction of light
4. Mirage is dur to Atmospheric refraction followed by Total Internal Reflection.
5. Early sunrise and delayed sunset because of Atmospheric refraction.
